Frolicking in Fall

Fall in Fort Collins starts out hot, but mornings and evenings are comfortably cool. You don’t have to venture far from campus to feel like you’re getting away from it all. Simply venture west for beautiful hiking and mountain biking trails.

Pineridge Natural Area

Nestled in the Fort Collins foothills, this open space is a popular hiking, fishing, and biking area. Enjoy city views, foothills terrain, a reservoir and beautiful forest just a couple of miles west of campus.

Lory State Park

At the northwest end of Horsetooth Reservoir lies Lory State Park. With access to the reservoir and 28 miles of trails, Lory is a great escape from campus for short or long hikes, mountain biking, horseback riding and jogging.

Poudre Canyon

Follow Hwy 14 west along the Cache La Poudre River into the Poudre Canyon for adventures less than an hour from campus. Riverside campsites, challenging hikes and Mishawaka await.

For fall we recommend:

Staying warm in winter

Winter in Colorado is like nowhere else. One day it can be -10 and dumping snow. Two days later, it’s 60° with brilliant blue sunny skies. The mountains are always calling to skiers, and there’s plenty to do around town. Layers are the name of the game for winter adventures.

Cameron Pass

A favorite area for winter adventurers. Known for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and wildlife viewing. Located 65 miles west of Fort Collins, you need a car to get this far out of town.

Maxwell Trail

Also known as the ‘A’ Trail, Maxwell is a beloved Fort Collins hike that leads to the iconic white “A” — a landmark built in 1923 by the college to honor the area’s agricultural roots and celebrate CSU pride. Start at the foot of the dam and hike up to epic views of Horsetooth Reservoir. Or park at the top and do the down first. Popular with mountain bikers and hikers with dogs. You might even see unicyclists!

Downtown Fort Collins

Wrap up a day of winter hiking or powder skiing at any one of the great restaurants, brew pubs, and hangouts downtown. Some have outdoor seating all year long with propane heaters and fire pits to keep you warm.

For winter we recommend:

Cameron Pass Parka

Maximum warmth insulates you against the elements.

Mens | Womens

Longs Peak Waterproof Rain Shell

This top layer keeps you dry and warm during inclement weather.

Mens | Womens

Front Range Fleece

Essential mid-layer that keeps you warm without bulk.

Thawing out for spring

Spring in Fort Collins is a beautiful mix of sun, rain, wind and snow—sometimes all within the same hour! As with anything you do in Colorado, being prepared for the unexpected is a way of life. The ski resorts shut down for mud season while the foothills burst with blooms.

Horsetooth Mountain Park

Beautiful and challenging trails help you shake off winter’s chill. Hike to the top of Horsetooth Mountain for miles of fantastic views. Run the Horsetooth Falls trail to see the water flow.

Shoreline and Bay to Bay Trails

Hike or run along the edge of Horsetooth Reservoir to spot wildflowers and local wildlife. The water is too cold in spring, but exploring along the reservoir’s edge is just as fun as jumping in.

Fort Collins Paved Trails

While things melt and warm up, dirt trails get muddy. Give them a break to dry out and wander, skate, jog or pedal along the miles of paved paths around town. These trails are maintained year-round for all-season activities.

For spring, we recommend:

Glacier Zip-Up Hoodie

Casual, comfy, and made sustainably.

Unisex

Horsetooth Hoodie Performance Quarter-Zip

Soft, light layer with hood and sleeve thumb holes.

Mens

Timberline Softshell

Mid-weight, recycled wind and water-resistant jacket.

Soaking up summer sun – Safely + Sustainably

Sunshine is something to be wary of every season, but especially in summer. Paddling, swimming and hiking at high altitudes require serious sunblock. Whether that’s from sunscreen or clothing, protecting your skin is a summertime must.

Paddle Boarding

Horsetooth Reservoir is a paddleboarder’s paradise. Satanka Cove at the north end and the reservoir south end are packed with paddlers enjoying smooth waters and lots of sunshine.

Mountain Biking

Abundant trails wind around the foothills in the form of smooth dirt, rocky technical climbs and wild downhills. You can find a trail that suits your ride within a mile or two of campus.

Downtown Festivals

Fort Collins loves a good gathering. From FoCoMX to Art Week and the Taste of Fort Collins to the Poudre River Fest and Tour de Fat, there are multiple happenings each month of summer.

For summer we recommend:

Satanka Cove Sun Hoodie

UPF 50+ protection for long, sunny summer days.

Mens | Womens

Sunset Ridge Performance Shorts

Breathable, sustainable Seawool fabric is made for movement.

Mens | Womens

Poudre Trail Performance Shirt

Featherlight, moisture-wicking, 84% recycled polyester.
